Okay so the weather in Wellington and right throughout the country seems to be depressing everyone a little (a lot). For those who don’t have a piggy bank of savings to dip into, to buy an escape ticket to some tropical island – you may find yourself stuck trying to figure out how to put a smile on your dial.

Due to some of the latest GAG drops we are currently in the empty piggy bank department. So when it comes to a quick smile on a budget - It’s the simple things that do it for us. Using a fresh roll of toilet paper in the bathroom, opening the dishwasher to discover it has already been emptied and @craptaxidermy.

A recent stumble on Instagram led us to a page consisting of only 23 posts and 5068 followers. The page description: Crap Taxidermy is a real thing. The posts are what you need on a day you drop your iPhone in a puddle when trying to text your mum for a lift home. Because hey - at least you didn’t use to be a humble squirrel that’s now pimping itself out on a shelf.

Or this cougar that has legitimate facial expressions of a cougar on Courtney place at 3am…

For your winter woes here is the anecdote. It may only be temporary but it’ll do the trick. See more at @craptaxidermy on Instagram or on Twitter here. There’s also a whole website dedicated to it….

ON & ON

On & On has refreshed our racks with a spritzing of nautical themed graphic prints on everyday tees. Their respect for simplicity and workmanship shows in all their gear. The tee’s are super easy to wear, seemingly simple from the front but making up for it with a bit more goodness on the back. It’s safe to say this drop is quality and timeless, aligning perfectly with their name On & On. Don’t worry about not being able to choose, the tee’s are long and short sleeved which means layering is completely viable and encouraged. See you in store or pick one up online here. Be warned, these bad boys are already selling out.

The Puma Suede Classics cannot be denied their classic title. From back when hot chicks wore hot pants and tall boys in basketball shorts dominated the city scene blasting the Beastie boys and hip hop beats straight from 80’s New York City blocks. They’ve been backed by Basketball legend Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier and athletic great Tommie Smith. They have that iconic suede street rep. And they’re online here for you to get yours, cos everybody loves getting fresh kicks.

1992

If you’re familiar with the infamous ATL Twins, then knowing that they’re the face of 1992 will paint a pretty explicit picture of what the brand is about. We say that like it’s a bad thing, it’s certainly not. 1992 is new to join GAG and has dropped us looks that play on iconic brands like Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Kawasaki – completely messing with them in the best way possible. Based in LA, 1992 is an art and design collective serving up fresh looks that appropriate classic American styles/obsessions. There’s a heap of sick tee’s all available here

A while back we stumbled across a trippers paradise; the life size sculpture collection at Gibbs Farm. If you haven’t checked it out before, you should put a Sunday aside and head up north of Auckland to Kaipara Harbour. Prepare to have your perception of distance and size obscured at this art collectors wet dream.

image

After 20 years Gibbs Farm includes major commissioned works by a plethora of national and international artists including Graham Bennet, Chris Booth, Daniel Buren, Bill Culbert, Neil Dawson, Marijke de Goey, Andy Goldsworthy, Ralph Hotere, Leon van den Eijkel, Zhan Wang and the list goes on. A major challenge for the artists is to compete with the extraordinary landscape; as rolling hills climb into mountains and gullies succumb to the dominating Kaipara Harbour- the largest harbour in the southern hemisphere.

image

Gibbs Farm is open to the public by appointment on a monthly basis, were telling you about it now so when Summer comes you might be able to take a look around. It’s fully booked well into December. You can check out more info here

So make a reservation, round up a solid crew, pack some tasty treats and make a day of it. It won’t disappoint. Everything will demand your attention, and bloody well deserves it.

THE ORIGINAL NB TENNIS SHOE

Known for killer collaborations and even better sneakers, New Balance’s most recent endeavour see’s the original CT300 tennis shoe make it’s grand return for 2014. Originally released back in ‘79, the low cut silhouette has had it’s colourway re-envisioned by premium sneaker retailers across Europe. Online and instore now, we’ve got two of the four collaborative feats in some pretty slick colours.

Colab number one has Berlin based store Firmament revamp the sneaker in a vision of burgundy, maroon and tan with a vibrant neon inner. Hanon’s Scottish take on the CT300 has a colourful combo of grey, purple and blue suedes ensuring the vintage style stays fresh. All of the latest sneakers from this drop have been hand-crafted to perfection at the iconic New Balance factory in Flimby, UK…hence the Made in England on the tongue. If this little write up isn’t enough to get you amped for these shoes—check out the sicko promo vid featuring all four colabs. And while your at it, check out our full range of NB here

Timeless, sophisticated, comfortable and versatile – is that too much to ask for? Surprisingly no. Alpha 60 has just wowed the GAG store again by ticking every damn box on our Winter wish lists.

They are back and not only did they personally curate the drop, we’re also the only ones stocking them in NZ - way to raise the bar guys. Every piece is made with top-notch materials and treated with respect and admirable restraint. They give you just enough of all the good bits and never over indulge in unnecessary detail.

It’s hard to do simple but when it’s done right you’re left with the overwhelming feeling of ‘give it to me now’ – you can’t it try on / buy each piece fast enough. You’ve two options; choose to drool on your keyboard online or come see it for real in store.

APPRECIATION & LOTS OF BE’S: Jessica Walsh

Get a load of this girl, but not for too long or you’ll just start questioning the meaning of life and move to NY. We know she has been around a while – twenty-eight years to be exact but she’s busy ticking off all the BE’s.

Be born in New York. Tick.
Be coding websites at 11. Tick.
Be made a partner of Stefan Sagmeister’s design firm. Tick.
Be great looking. Tick.
Be blending handcraft, photography and painting with digital design and BE so bloody good at it that people want you to BE a judge of really cool award shows and stuff like that.
Be a fan of avocados.
Be a yogi with a dog.
Be ETC

Even if you don’t want to be these things you will at least be impressed when you check out her workA. ND if you haven’t already seen it, her ‘Forty Days Of Dating’ project is definitely look worthy. As an experiment she dated her best friend for forty days – documented it and designed it for our viewing pleasure. Because she’s Jessica Walsh.

Heard of Size? (?) Stupid question. This is not their first sneaker colab and it won’t be the last. Lucky for us a month after Size?’s own official release of the ‘Wilderness’ pack, we have managed to filch both slick colour themes and are one of only two NZ stockists.

image

Inspired by harsh environmental terrain, the ‘Wilderness’ pack includes the ‘Sahara’ version of the Puma R698 and the ‘Inner City’ version of the Puma XS850. These classic retro Trinomic silhouettes were initially released in the 90’s but are still cutting the some of the sharpest foot shapes now.

image

The ‘Inner City’ theme explores the ability to survive in an urban concrete jungle in it’s dark, reserved leather/textile upper. By night the city comes alight in the bold yellow lining and 3M reflective components along the base as well as the speckled almost map like patterning at the heel.

image

In stark contrast, the ‘Sahara’ colour theme is all sky and wind swept desert in it’s soft and multi-layered leather and suede, with a sand speckled mid-sole and oasis-like accents.

image

Shit there could be a million worse things to base a set of sneakers on. I’m into these guys, hard.

Shop them right hurrrrrr.

If you haven’t checked out the latest exhibition tearing it up at the City Art Gallery you’ve probably at least heard of it, and in that case, what the f**k are you waiting for?

image

Korean-New Zealand artist Seung Yul Oh has been described as ‘one of the rising stars of the Asian market’ by the Guardian UK. His large-scale sculptures are not only visually pleasing, but playfully interactive. His work features inflatable pieces that have drawn in crowds of all ages and an ongoing video project The Ability to Blow Themselves Up which is frightfully mesmerizing.
 image

Oh gained a Master of Fine Arts from Elam in 2005 and achieved early recognition with an exhibition where he deep-fried his paintings. Now that’s some tasty art. MOAMOA, is Korean for ‘gather-gather’ or ‘gather-together’, and is an experience best shared with others. Time ceases to exist and your inner child takes over while playing with his work. It’s one of few exhibitions where you really are transported to another world; a world where everyone is happy, the colour yellow rules all and nothing stands quietly still.

image

Whether you’re on the daily 9-5 grind, a budding artist or mother of three, it’s hard not appreciate Oh’s work and is well worth a visit. But be warned, a quick 10 minute geeze may turn into an hour long break from reality. Time it right so you don’t have to fight off hordes of kids for your turn on the gigantic inflatable beanbag (or love sack) depending on your company.

Oh and did we mention it’s free? There’s no excuse not to check it, unless it’s after the 24th August. In which case you’ve missed it and are by default, a dickhead.

Every week we get a visit from the cutest couple in town, and every time we think holy crap CUTE couple. Maddy and Sean are big fans of Lazy OafCheap MondayNorse Projects, and they do it good season by season. It was about time the shop girls jumped on on these two cuties and sent them up to the office for their GAG Gang initiation. They look pretty bloody cute in their pick of the sale! Here’s what they’ve got to say.

What do you do?
Sean is doing a Bachelor of Design at Massey, teaches guitar and is part of several music projects including Cecil & Hercules and Wayas. I’m also at Massey doing a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

Relationship to GAG?
Store regulars over the last few years but also very recent Instagram models

What is special about GAG and why do you visit the store?
Good As Gold has become a staple in our clothing purchases. The store has a great vibe, cool playlists, awesome friendly staff, and not to mention the clothes are always on point! There aren’t too many stores like it.

Any other comments?
Thanks for the fun times and letting us play dressup!

OUR VINYL WEIGHS A TON

If you don’t know Stones Throw Records it’s about bloody time you did. Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton is a feature-length documentary about the infamous LA-based record label Stones Throw Records. Founded in 1996 by Chris Manak a.k.a Peanut Butter Wolf, the doco is full of good shit including never before seen concert footage, home videos, photos, archival material and follows the artist who put Stones Throw Records on the map and “gives an exclusive look into the label’s left-of-center artists, history, culture and global following”. Plus it’s full of interviews with some of the worlds best musical talent like Snoop Dogg, Kanye West, Common, Tyler the Creator and a whole heap more.

What makes this documentary even better is the fact that it’s being screened right here in Wellington followed by a performance by Peanut Butter Wolf himself! It’s bound to be a sick night so don’t miss out on tickets which are available here

If you wanna piece of the goodness and see what it’s about, you can catch the trailer here. You won’t be disappointed. Not even remotely.
